Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team came out on the wrong end of both games in its home opener doubleheader against Saint John's University, losing 5-3 and 16-5 (7 inn.).
Game 1 – Saint John's 5, Carleton 3
Starters Carter Thiesen and
Sam Chutkow sailed through the opening three innings, until Ryan Janzen broke the deadlock with an RBI triple in the fourth.
Down 1-0, the Knights (6-10, 0-6 MIAC) struck back in the bottom of the frame. They took advantage of a throwing error on an
Asher Stolberg bunt and a wild pitch to score two runs, and
Nathan Barnhart singled to make it 3-1.
The Johnnies (14-10, 4-2 MIAC) singled in a run in the top of the sixth, and Carleton threw away a soft chopper that should have been the final out of the inning, scoring two more unearned runs. Saint John's tacked on another unearned run in the top of the seventh, and the Knights only put one runner on base in the final two innings.
Will Schnepf was 2-for-4 with a run. Chutkow tossed 6.0 innings, scattered five hits, conceded two earned runs, and struck out a season-high seven.
Game 2 – Saint John's 16, Carleton 5 (7 inn.)
The Johnnies pushed across a run in the first on a pair of hits, and scored seven in the second as a series of softly hit bloops and bleeders bedeviled the Knights. Carleton showed life with four runs in the bottom of the second.
Brandon Damelin started things with a low liner to left that scooted past the left fielder for a double, and the Knights used a bit of their own good fortune with two infield hits and a pair of walks helping halve the deficit.
Saint John's slammed the door soon after, scoring six more in the third and tacking on two in the fourth.
Sam Gossard slugged a double to left to drive in a run in the fourth, but that wrapped Carleton's scoring.
Damelin was 2-for-3 in his first career start. Gossard was an identical 2-for-3 with a walk.
Sam Zacks scored two of Carleton's runs.
Jake Stern had a nearly perfect relief outing, going 2.0 innings with the only baserunner coming from an error. He struck out two.
