Game Recap: Baseball |

Knights swept by Cardinals to conclude conference slate

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In the final doubleheader of the MIAC schedule, the Carleton College baseball team came up empty against the Saint Mary's University Cardinals, losing game one 7-4, and game two 14-1 (7 inn.)

Game 1 Recap – Saint Mary's 7, Carleton 4
After a quiet first inning, Reese Berg floated a fly ball down the right field line that barely stayed fair for a leadoff triple. The Cardinals (24-12, 12-8 MIAC) cashed in with an RBI single from Ryan Csida, and Csida scored on a looping double from Sam Knickerbocker. Carleton (9-26, 6-14 MIAC) got one back in the second when Ryan Chang beat out an infield hit, Will Schnepf singled up the middle, and Tyler Vandersall split a gap for a run-scoring double.

Carleton earned the lead in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff walk to Vandersall and a one-out single from Andrew Sellers. Senior Sam Gossard powered a ball of the left-field wall, driving in a pair for a 3-2 lead. The visitors scraped back the lead in the fifth, taking advantage of a throwing error to plate a pair and go up 4-3. The Knights tied things right back up when Adam Rubin laced an RBI single to center with two outs in the fifth. The game went into the seventh all square at 4-4, but Gavin Schulte drove a triple down the line in right that pushed two runs across, and the Cardinals added another run in the inning. Carleton got a runner on in the seventh but could not score.

Schnepf started on the hill and struck out seven over 5.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits. Sam Chutkow tossed the final 2.0 innings, allowing four hits and striking out one.

Gossard posted a 2-for-3 line at the plate with a walk and a pair of RBI. Schnepf completed a two-way day with a 2-for-3 hitting performance, scoring a run.

Game 2 Recap – Saint Mary's 14, Carleton 1
Saint Mary's exploded for eight runs on eight hits in the top of the first, with three Carleton miscues helping put the visitors up big early.

Schnepf punched a triple to right to lead off the second, and Reece Wellsandt brought him in with a sacrifice fly. Back-to-back walks and another error helped the Cardinals to push two third-inning runs across without the benefit of a hit. No further runs would cross until the seventh, when Schulte hit a bases-clearing double, and a Berg single capped the scoring.

Rubin and Sellers both went 2-for-3 to provide some punch at the bottom of the lineup.

Jackson Corcoran ate 5.0 innings in relief, allowing two base hits and an earned run.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton concludes its season on Tuesday, May 5 against Martin Luther College. First pitch of the doubleheader at Mel Taube Field is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
