Day 1 Recap

WINONA, Minn. – Ben Santos (Sr./Boulder, Colo./Boulder) pulled away on the final lap to claim the steeplechase title as the Carleton College men's track & field team tied for fifth place in the team competition at the 2022 MIAC Outdoor Championships.
 
Saint John's cruised to the team title with 218.25 points. The remainder of the top five included St. Olaf (141 points), Bethel (123), and Concordia-Moorhead (92.25) with Carleton and Gustavus Adolphus tied for fifth place (58.25).
 
The Knights' first points on Saturday came from Aravindh Subramanian (Jr./Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick), who tied for eighth place in the high jump after clearing 1.84 meters. That is the highest he has soared during any collegiate outdoor track & field season.
 
Santos won the first track event of the day. He was content to let St. Olaf's Will Kelly lead until there were 450 meters remaining. That's when Santos made his move to the front and gradually widened his lead throughout the final lap around the track. He crossed the line at 9:20.93, a new personal best and nearly 10 seconds better than he ran at last year's conference championship.
 
Josh Meier (Fy./Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and Ethan Ash (So./Oakland, Calif./Head-Royce School) both scored team points in the 800-meter run. The former clocked a time of 1:58.43, while the latter finished in 1:59.17.
 
Coming off a victory in last night's 10,000-meter run, Stephen Lavey (Sr./Cedar Grove, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) took seventh in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday. He covered the distance in 15:25.34.
 
Carleton picked up All-MIAC Honorable Mention for the 4x400-meter relay after the quartet of Riaz Kelly (So./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central), Meier, Ash, and Bridger Rives (Sr./Skiatook, Okla./Bishop Kelley) combined on a season-best time of 3:23.04 as they finished in fifth place.
 
Up Next for the Knights
Lavey is in good condition for a bid to the upcoming NCAA Championships. He is currently ranked No. 8 in the county for the 10,000-meter run.
