WINONA, Minn. – Stephen Lavey's (Sr./Cedar Grove, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) triumph in the 10,000-meter run was the highlight performance for the Carleton College men's track & field team on day 1 of the MIAC Outdoor Championships. The Knights are third out of 11 teams following Friday's action.
Lavey was content to run on the hip of St. Olaf's Logan Bocovich until there were 1400 meters remaining. At that point, the Carleton senior found another gear and quickly opened up a 30-meter gap, an advantage that Lavey would maintain over the final 3.5 laps. He crossed the line at 30:58.33, besting the previous facility record by more than 36 seconds.
Teammates Henry Bowman (Jr./Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) and Adam Nakasaka (Sr./Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) grabbed all-conference honorable mention after placing fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 31:33.07 and 31:37.21. Due to high temperatures, the start of this race was pushed back until after sunset.
Both Ian Mortensen (So./Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) and Noah Eckersley-Ray (Jr./Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) secured All-MIAC honorable mention in the javelin throw. Mortensen measured 50.11 meters in his final attempt, while Eckersly-Ray fouled on his first two attempts before uncorking a toss of 48.56 meters to earn a spot in the finals and eventually sixth place.
Owen Schuster (Sr./Batavia, Ill./Batavia) took fifth place in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 4.31 meters.
Bridger Rives (Sr./Skiatook, Okla./Bishop Kelley), Alistair Pattison (So./St. Paul, Minn./Como Park), Josh Meier (Fy./Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge), and Ethan Ash (So./Oakland, Calif./Head-Royce School) took home All-MIAC honorable mention after the Knights' quartet placed sixth in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 8:00.49.
Friday also saw a handful of other Knights qualify for Saturday's event finals on the track:
• Elijah Jones (Jr./Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and Zak Sather (Jr./Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) grabbed the final automatic qualifying spots in their respective prelim heats for the 1,500-meter run. Jones clocked a personal-best time of 4:05.53, while Sather crossed the line at 4:06.66.
• Pattison, Ash, and Meier each grabbed spots in the finals of the 800-meter run after posting times of 1:57.14, 1:57.17, and 1:57.72, respectively.
Carleton's point total got a boost from Mortensen's fourth-place result in last week's MIAC Decathlon.
Up Next for the Knights
The conference meet concludes on Saturday, with competition getting underway at 12:00 p.m. (field events) and 1:00 p.m. (track events).
