WAVERLY, Iowa – On Day 2 of the Sugar Loaf Classic, the Carleton College volleyball team absorbed a pair of setbacks, falling by 3-0 scores to Wartburg College and Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE).
The Carleton (2-3 overall) offense never got on track, hitting .052 overall on the day, while the Knights two opponents posted a combined .205 attack percentage.
Wartburg Match Recap
Wartburg, which was receiving votes in the AVCA preseason top-25 poll, went on a 10-3 run midway through the first set and captured a 25-23 result. Carleton led 14-13 in the second set before Wartburg scored 12 of the next 14 points to notch a 25-16 win. The third set was knotted 7-7, but Wartburg won six straight points and maintained at least a three point advantage the rest of the way en route to a 25-17 victory.
Annelise Sokolow (So./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) paced Carleton with nine kills and added 12 digs.
Kennedy Bombei (Fy./Solon, Iowa/Solon) collected 22 digs, the most by a Knight in a three-set match since Katie Tritschler had 23 against Concordia College on Sept. 29, 2017.
MSOE Match Recap
The Raiders scored the first five points in both the first and second sets and grabbed the 2-0 lead after winning those games by scores of 25-18 and 25-20. Carleton led most of the third set, but a 12-4 run by MSOE turned the tables, and the Raiders completed the sweep by a 25-23 tally.
Sokolow again led the Knights with nine kills, and this time she added five service aces, the most by a Carleton player in a three-set match since
Abby Loe registered five versus UW-Superior on Sept. 15, 2017.
