Moorhead, Minn. -- Matt Hooley added the 5,000-meter title on Saturday to go with his 10,000 meter win on Friday at the 2003 MIAC Outdoor Championships.
Dan Bucy won the 3,000-meter steeplechase as Carleton finished fifth as a team.
The University of St. Thomas claimed its fourth consecutive title by rallying past Gustavus to finish with 221.5 points. St. John's edged out the Gusties for second, 148.5-130. St. Olaf College was fourth with 93 points, followed by Carleton (65) and Hamline University (48).
Hooley rana 15:14.49 in the 5,000 on Saturday, winning by nearly 14 seconds. In Friday's 10,000 he clocked a time of 31:33.54, slower than the 30:48.16 he ran at the Drake Relays, but it was still good enough to hold off Brian Preus (31:34.45) and Levi Severson (31:34.78), both of St. Thomas. Bucy placed sixth and Chris Lundberg placed eighth in the event. Lundberg was fifth in the 5,000 and Tom Church also scored points, placing eighth.
On Saturday, Bucy owned the steeplechase, winning comfortably in 9:26.89. Bryan Donald, meanwhile, was edged in the 1,500-meter finals. It came down to a two-man race between Donald and SJU's John Mathews, with the Johnnie senior edging the Knight senior in 4:05.92 to Donald's 4:06.37.
Graham Zorn just missed all-conference honors (given to top three finishers), placing fourth in the 800 meters in 1:55.74. Eric Smith also missed all-conference honors by one place, finishing the shot put with a distance of 47'7.75".
The Knights received a pair of seventh-place finishes in the throwing events on Friday. Adam Witt's toss of 129'9" in the discus and Andy French's 139'3" distance in the hammer throw both earned Carleton team points.
The Knights' fifth-place finish came despite them not fielding any competitors in seven events.
The competition was staged in cold and rainy conditions, with 50-degree temperatures and rain the norm for both days, with some wind mixed in on Saturday.
