NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's track & field program hosted the 11-team Meet of the Hearts on Saturday, with the Knights triumphing in four events:
Soren Kaster won the pole vault,
James Alexander was first to the line in the 400-meter dash,
Gabe Nichols cruised to victory in the 3,000-meter run, and Carleton capped the meet with a first-place result in the 4x400-meter relay.
The day started with the Knights' fastest 4x200-meter relay in seven years as
Max Jones,
Isaac Robertson, Alexander, and
Asher Nathan finished in 1:32.54, only 0.11 behind the victors. Jones made a diving hand-off to Robertson, with Nathan running an impressive 21.81 split to narrowly miss an amazing come-from-behind finish.
Kaster started his day with a fifth-place result in the 55-meter hurdles as he clocked a personal-best 8.26 to tie Pat Smith for 10th in program history.
Carleton had four of the top six finishers in the mile run.
Roy Llewellyn (4:25.98) took second, followed by
Emerson Lange (4:28.17),
Kyle Thompson (PR of 4:35.12), and
Martin Moshfeghi (PR of 4:38.32) in fourth, fifth, and sixth places, respectively.
Alexander then won the 400-meter race with an indoor personal-best time of 52.41.
All three Knights racing the 1000-meter distance established new PRs as
Jacob Hopkins (2:34.07),
Dashiell Coyier (2:34.66), and
Ronen Silberman (2:37.44) finished third, fourth, and sixth overall.
In the 200-meter dash, Nathan ran a personal-best time of 22.94 to take third at this meet and move into a tie with Eric Sveska for the No. 9 spot on Carleton's all-time leaderboard.
The 3000-meter run saw
Simon Chambers-Trubach (8:58.74) win his heat while setting a new personal best before Nichols destroyed the field in the fast heat. Nichols grabbed the lead off the starting line and never looked back in besting the field by half a lap with his time of 8:24.96.
Kaster cleared 4.30 meters to win the pole vault competition, his best ever performance at the Recreation Center.
The day concluded with the victory in the 4x400 as Alexander, Robertson,
Reed White, and Nathan combined on a time of 3:28.32.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton heads across town for the Tostrud Classic on Friday, Feb. 20 at St. Olaf College. Field events begin at 5:00 p.m. with racing on the track commencing at 6:00 p.m. That meet will be the final tune up for the MIAC Indoor Championships to be held at Carleton from Feb. 26-28.
