NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Carleton College junior
Stephanie Baranov finished 14th at the MIAC Heptathlon. She totaled 3,180 points in her first complete multi-even competition.
"Throughout the two-day event Stephanie did a tremendous job keeping her composure," said Carleton head coach
Donna Ricks. "The ability to transition from one event to another is key to being a successful multi athlete. I'm excited to see what Stephanie will accomplish in the future especially after she gains valuable experience in these events."
Baranov entered the day 16th out of 18 entrants and still held that position after leaping 3.99 meters in the long jump. She moved up a spot in the standings thanks to a career best of 26.08 meters in the javelin, a nearly nine-foot improvement over her previous top performance.
She climbed another spot on the leaderboard after winning the final event of the heptathlon, the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:33.26.
Baranov was passed by four competitors in the last 300 meters, but she rallied on the final straightway and was able to capture first place by 0.72 seconds to edge out the top three finishers in the overall competition: Concordia's Jenna Kavelik (4,489 points) and Peyton Selle (4,442 points) and Justus Floren (4,451 points) of Saint Benedict.
