Soren Kaster is fifth and junior
Reese Anderson sits seventh after the first day of the MIAC Decathlon.
Kaster has earned 3,116 points over the first five events, while Anderson has accumulated 3,052 points. Max Lelwica of Saint John's leads the 14-member field with 3,570 points.
Both Knights posted a time of 11.54 in the opening event, the 100-meter dash. This was a new PR of Anderson, and it was the best non-wind aided time in Kaster's career.
The next event was the long jump. Kaster measured 5.96 meters, while Anderson leapt a career-best 6.05 meters.
Anderson notched his third PR in as many events after a heave of 10.44 meters in the shot put. Kaster's mark of 10.84 meters matched his performance from last year's decathlon.
Kaster had an outdoor personal PR of 1.68 meters in the high jump, while Anderson, who injured his ankle during the long jump, still managed to clear 1.56 meters.
The opening day of the two-day competition concluded with the 400-meter dash. Anderson clocked a time of 51.08, while Kaster crossed the line at 51.87.
Day 2 of the MIAC Decathlon begins at 10:30 a.m. with the 110-meter hurdles. The remainder of the competition includes the discus throw, pole vault, javelin, and 1500-meter run.
