Soren Kaster breaks school heptathlon record at MIAC Indoor Championships

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Soren Kaster set a new school record while finishing second in the heptathlon and Gabe Nichols added a runner-up result in the mile run as that duo led the Carleton College men's track & field team on Day 2 of the MIAC Indoor Championships.

The Knights are 9th of 11 teams.

Kaster totaled 4,745 points, eclipsing the previous team standard of 4,654 points established by Colby Seyferth at the 2015 conference meet.

Both Kaster and Reese Anderson, who earned all-conference honorable mention after finishing sixth in the heptathlon, established five new PRs during the seven-event competition.

Kaster entered the second day of the heptathlon in fifth place after amassing 2,505 points and going 4-for-4 on new personal bests during Thursday's portion of the meet. He moved into third place in the standings after finishing third in the 60-meter hurdles and earning 761 points by clocking a time of 8.93. Anderson began Day 2 in ninth place with 2,290 points. He improved one spot in the standings and set a new career best with his time of 9.11 in the 60-meter hurdles. That was fifth-fastest and earned him 722 points. Anderson was sixth in the pole vault, clearing 3.90 meters to secure 590 points but dropping back into ninth place. However, he was second-fastest in the 1000-meter run, crossing the line at a personal best 2:48.81 to collect 778 points and climb into sixth place overall.

Nichols finished second in the mile for the second time in as many years. He took the lead during the fourth lap and ran from in front until he was edged at the line. Nichols' time of 4:13.01 was a season-best.

Ryan Bernstein (10th at personal best 4:32.49), Travis Brown (14th at 4:34.00), Andrew Jamison (18th at 4:38.06), Kyle Thompson (21st at 4:39.97), and Ben Mazor (22nd at 4:40.21) also competed in the event.
