Six Knights tabbed for CSC Academic All-District Men's Soccer Team

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Six members of the Carleton College men's soccer program were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® Team for 2025. Senior defender Alexander Grosse and senior midfielder Jonathan Vonderlage both earned the award for the third time, while senior forward Ben Pennell and junior defender-forward Hays Turner received the accolade for the first time. Senior goalkeeper Leo Kugel and junior defender Josh Zebrack collected their first CSC academic honors.

Each school can nominate up to six student-athletes that meet the following criteria:
• at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (a benchmark each of these six Knights easily surpassed)
• compete in at least 90 percent of the institution's games or start at least 66 percent of the contests
• at least a sophomore academically and athletically.

Grosse, a biology major with a German minor, led the team in minutes played as he saw action in 1,469 of a possible 1,530 minutes. He started all 17 games on the backline this fall and started 68 of Carleton's last 69 games. The centerback has four career goals, including the game winner vs. Simpson on Sept. 1, 2025. He assisted on the Homecoming Game winner vs. Saint Mary's on Oct. 18, 2025.

Vonderlage, a psychology major, started all 17 games for Carleton in 2025 and 73 of a possible 75 games over his career. He totaled 10 assists this fall, ranking second in the MIAC during the regular season and tied for third-highest single-season total in recorded team history. He tallied 11 career goals with 21 career assists, the latter figure ranking sixth in recorded program history.

Pennell, a chemistry major, was chosen for the All-MIAC First Team once again in 2025. He led the conference with 12 goals through first 12 games this season, including hat trick vs. Lincoln, before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He concluded the year ranked second among MIAC players at 0.92 goals per game and 2.00 points per game. His four game-winning goals were fourth in the conference during the regular season. An All-Conference pick in 2023 and All-MIAC Honorable Mention in 2024, he finished with 35 career goals—tied for second-most in team history—along with 15 assists for 85 career points. All of those totals would have surely been higher had Pennell not missed 15 games over last two seasons due to injury.

Turner, a physics major, started the season as an outside defender but moved to forward when Pennell—the team's leading scorer—suffered season-ending injury. He was second among field players in minutes player (1,301) and finished the season with three goals and an assist.

Kugel, a philosophy major, started a career-high 16 games and made 49 saves with four shutouts, tied for second among MIAC goalkeepers during the regular season. He appeared in 32 games over his career and posted a 1.061 GAA with 12 shutouts.

Zebrack, a chemistry major, started 16 times at centerback this fall after being limited to only five appearances in 2024 due to injury. He was third among field players with 1,283 minutes played this season.

Vonderlage and Pennell were selected to advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced Dec. 16.
