TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –
Gabe Nichols and
Roy Llewellyn wrapped up the season by racing at the NCAA Division III Championships. Nichols finished 125th in the field of 294 runners, while Llewellyn crossed the line in 157th.
"Gabe and Roy finished right around where we expected," said Carleton head coach
Dave Ricks. "It's hard to race at Nationals without the rest of your team. These two guys ran side-by-side in practice just about every day this fall, so it was fitting that they both qualified for Nationals and finished their seasons off together. They will both take a bit of a break from running to do some traveling. When they return, they'll both be better for having trained together. This is a step towards next year and trying to get the team back to Nationals in 364 days."
Although Carleton did not qualify as a team this year, it did mark the fifth time that the Knights had multiple individual qualifiers (see chart below).
Both Carleton runners moved up throughout the course of the race. Nichols was 267th after the first kilometer, 187th at the four-kilometer mark and kept climbing up the leaderboard.
Llewellyn was in 217th place midway through the eight-kilometer race but gradually passed runners over the final four kilometers.
