Six Knights earn spots on CSC Academic All-District Men's Soccer Team

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Six members of the Carleton College men's soccer program were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® Team for 2024. Senior midfielder Owen Flanagan earned the honor for the third time, while senior forward Blake Jones, junior defender Alexander Grosse, and junior midfielder Jonathan Vonderlage received the accolade for the second time. Senior defender Marc Eidelhoch and sophomore defender Hays Turner collected their first CSC academic awards.

Each school can nominate up to six student-athletes that meet the following criteria:
• at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (a benchmark each of these six Knights easily surpassed)
• compete in at least 90 percent of the institution's games or start at least 66 percent of the contests
• at least a sophomore academically and athletically.

Carleton went 12-5-3 during the 2024 campaign and qualified for the MIAC Playoffs for the 17th consecutive time, extending their own conference record. The Knights advanced to the semifinals before falling to then No. 4 Gustavus Adolphus College by a 3-2 tally.

Flanagan, a history major, garnered All-MIAC First Team status as he paced the Knights with 12 goals on the season, tied for third in the conference. He added six assists—two of which came on game-winning goals—for a team-best 30 points, also ranking third among MIAC players this year and the fifth-highest single-season total in program history. Flanagan totaled 26 goals in his career, tied for fourth in team history, while ranking sixth with 65 points over his four seasons.

Jones, a computer science major, was previously an Academic All-District selection in 2022. He started all 20 games this fall and was fourth on the Knights with 10 points after tallying three goals and adding four assists. Carleton was 3-0 when he scored and two of his assists came on game-winning goals. Jones totaled 11 goals and 13 assists over his four-years with the Knights.

Grosse, a biology major with a German minor, started all 20 games at center back, and his play allowed Carleton to limit the top-eight goal scorers in the MIAC to a combined totals of only five shots and 1 goal. Grosse scored three times, including game winners against Cornell College and Bethel University, the latter of those coming during the MIAC Playoffs. He also assisted on the game-winner at UW-River Falls. Grosse, who was also Academic All-District in 2023, logged a team-high 1,752 minutes this fall.

Vonderlage, a psychology major, started all 20 games for Carleton and played 1,418 minutes, second-most among midfielders on this year's roster. He set up the game-opening goal against Concordia-Moorhead, tallied the game winner at Simpson College, and tacked on an insurance goal in a victory over St. Scholastica that sparked the Knights to winning 6 of 7 games to close the regular season. Vonderlage, an Academic All-District pick in 2023, then added an assist in the postseason win at Bethel.

Eidelhoch, a computer science and statistics double major, appeared in all 20 games for the Knights. A season-ending injury elsewhere on the roster opened up a spot in the lineup, and Eidelhoch made 16 starts as he played a key role for a defense that owned a 0.90 goals against average, second-best in the MIAC.

As a sophomore, Turner and his classmates have yet to declare their intended majors. He moved from forward in 2023 to outside back for 2024 but was still a key contributor at both ends of the field. He ended up leading Carleton with seven assists on the season, with the Knights going 7-0 in those contests. He adapted quickly to his new defensive role and played a key role for the backline that held D-III scoring leader UW-Superior (4.83 goals per game) scoreless.

Flanagan and Grosse are among 179 student-athletes to advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced Dec. 10.
