Knights open 2025 season with 3-1 triumph over UW-River Falls

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Ben Pennell and Luke Brown staked the Carleton College men's soccer team to a lead with first-half goals, and Briggs Priem slammed home an 88th-minute dagger as the Knights won their opening match against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons 3-1.

After a quiet first 25 minutes of the match Priem nicked the ball off a defender in the River Falls half and it found forward Willan Shrock. Shrock picked out Pennell alone at the top of the box, and the clinical striker scored his 24th career goal for Carleton (1-0), moving him to a tie for 7th all-time (see chart below).

Pennell was the creator of the games second goal as well, heading onto the right flank and playing into the 18-yard box for substitute Brown. The senior's initial attempt was blocked, but he pounced on the rebound to poke home in the final minute of the first half.

UW-River Falls (0-1) started the second half with some fire, creating early chances and outshooting the Knights. The Falcons had a few gilt-edged chances go astray in that run. But, it was ironically Sorrel Richardson's speculative effort from 28 yards that went between a Carleton defender's legs and wrong-footed the 'keeper. That 67th-minute goal cut the deficit to 2-1.

River Falls forced a couple of difficult saves out of Leo Kugel as they fought for an equalizer, but the senior netminder held firm until the 89th minute. There, Felix Shapiro received the ball deep, beat a defender off the dribble, and slipped a ball into the onrushing Jonathan Vonderlage. Vonderlage lashed a ball across the face of goal from the byline, and Priem rushed into the box and slammed home the dagger goal, his 15th career tally.

Priem finished with a goal and an assist, the seventh game in his career with at least one goal and assist. Eight Carleton players registered a shot. Kugel made four saves in the contest. His counterpart Josh Bates made three for the Falcons.
