Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Ben Pennell continues scoring streak as Knights top Bethany Lutheran, 3-2

MANKATO, Minn. – Luke Brown opened the scoring and Ben Pennell had a brace as the Carleton College men's soccer team improved to 3-0-0 on the year with a 3-2 victory at Bethany Lutheran College.

Pennell's four goals this season tie him for second among MIAC players on the young season. He has tallied at least one goal in his last nine games, dating back to Oct. 19 2024, totaling 12 goals over that span.

The Knights forced a 12th-minute turnover in their defensive half as Asher Burt took the ball away in the midfield and slid it over to Brown, who turned and unleashed a 23-yard screamer over the Vikings' goalkeeper for his second goal of the season and the fourth of his career.

Six minutes later, the margin doubled as the Carleton pressure forced another giveaway leading to a quick goal. Jonathan Vonderlage dispossessed a Viking in the midfield and slotted a pass ahead to Pennell, who ran on to it and smashed a shot past the diving goal keeper and into the net.

Pennell found the back of the net again in the 60th minute. Burt forced another turnover, and a quick pass by Vonderlage found the feet of Brown, who slid a pass beyond the Vikings' backline. Pennell one-touched his shot inside the far side of the net, giving him 27 career goals and sole possession of fourth place in program history (see charts below). This was the fifth multi-goal game of his career and his 67 career points are good for fifth in team annals.

Bethany Lutheran tried to rally late, notching its first goal of the season when Goncalo Nolasco smashed home a 79th-minute header off a corner kick by Guilherme Gancho. The hosts pulled to within a goal as Juan Campos converted a penalty kick in the 87th minute.

Carleton finished with a slight 14-13 edge in shots, but the Knights held an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal.

Next up for the Knights
Carleton's four-match road trip continues with a visit to Viterbo University on Sunday, Sept. 7.
