INDIANAPOLIS –
Gabe Nichols and
Roy Llewellyn of the Carleton College men's cross country team both earned individual qualifying spots for the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.
The first seven student-athletes from each region who are not a part of a qualifying team, were selected to participate at Nationals. Nichols finished 17th and Llewellyn 24th at Saturday's NCAA North Region Championship but were moved into individual qualifying spots.
Ultimately, six teams from the North Region are headed to the national meet. No. 1 UW-La Crosse won the North Region race, earning an automatic berth in the 32-team field.
No. 6 UW-Whitewater and No. 9 St. Olaf College earned two of the first at-large bids, which moved Nichols into the top-7 remaining runners and securing his spot in the field at the NCAA Championships. Llewellyn sat 10th on the list at this point.
Once UW-Stevens Point and No. 22 UW-Eau Claire collected two more of the coveted at-large bids, Llewellyn inched up to eighth on the list of potential individual qualifiers.
Finally, Carthage College was added to the 32-team field for Nationals, which resulted in Llewellyn being pulled into a top-7 spot.
This will be the second consecutive year that the two Knights will race at the NCAA Championships. Last year, when Carleton was a team qualifier, Llewellyn ended up as Carleton's top finisher in 2023, finishing 129th. Nichols was close behind, placing 134th.
Nichols and Llewellyn will be joined at the NCAA Championships by the Carleton women's team, which received an at-large bid.
The women's race at the national championships will begin at 11:00 a.m. ET/10:00 a.m. CT. with the men's race starting at 12:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. CT. The competition will be held at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course.
