ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Carleton College men's track & field team turned in four All-MIAC performances and two more worthy of all-conference honorable mention during the final day of competition at the 2023 MIAC Outdoor Championships. The Knights finished fifth out of 11 programs.
Saint John's won the team competition, with St. Olaf, Bethel, Macalester, and Carleton rounding out the top five.
Ian Mortensen (Jr./Seattle, Wash./Shorecrest) tallied Carleton's first team points of the day and picked up all-conference recognition as he took second place in the javelin. He surpassed 54 meters in all six of his attempts, with the top measurement a personal-best 57.04 meters.
Noah Eckersley-Ray (Sr./Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention with his top distance of 49.05 meters, good for sixth place.
Josh Meier (So./Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and
Ethan Ash (Jr./Oakland, Calif./Head-Royce School) placed second and third, respectively, in the 800-meter run to earn both of them All-MIAC status. Meier, who was in sixth place with 300 meters to go, covered the distance in a personal-best 1:54.84, while Ash finished in 1:54.99.
Reese Anderson (Fy./Frontenac, Minn./Lake City) added to the Carleton team total when he finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 57.05.
The Knghts collected points from three racers in the 5,000-meter run.
Gabe Nichols (Fy./Grove City, Penn./Grove City),
Henry Bowman (Sr./Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus), and
Roy Llewellyn (Fy./Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) finished third, fourth, and seventh, respectively. Nichols finished in a personal-best 14:44.53 as he earned All-MIAC status. Bowman picked up all-conference honorable mention while posting a new PR of 14:49.69. Llewellyn completed the race in 14:55.04.
The meet concluded with the 4x400-meter relay. Carleton's entry finished seventh in the 4x400-meter run as
Liam Kennedy (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central), Meier,
Jeremy Fong (Sr./Niiza-Shi, Japan/Christian Academy in Japan), and Ash combined on a season-best time of 3:22.77.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton may send a few individuals to compete at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Final Qualifier on Thursday, May 18. That would be one final opportunity to try and post a qualifying time/mark for the upcoming NCAA Championships on May 25-27.
