JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. – The Carleton College softball team split the first two games of its annual Spring Break trip, defeating Oswego State, 7-2, before falling 14-6 (6 inn) to Framingham State.
Cassie Cunniff (Sr./Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) had a huge day at the plate, going 6-for-8 with two home runs, a double, three RBI, and five runs scored.
Game 1 Recap
Carleton 7, Oswego State 2
Cunniff got the Knights (5-1) off to a quick start, leading off the day by smacking her first home run of the season. After the Lakers (2-8) leveled the score, Carleton got a two-out run in the third when
Bryanna Schaffer (So./San Diego, Calif./Mar Vista) doubled and raced home on
Laurie Avila's (Sr./Sugar Grove, Ill./Oswego) base hit.
Oswego State tied it up with an unearned run in the fourth, but Cunniff responded immediately, belting her second roundtripper of the game to begin the fifth inning. This is her third career two-homer game.
Carleton put the game out of reach with four more tallies in the seventh inning. Cunniff doubled with one out and scored on a single by
Adriana Wiggins (Fy./Long Beach, Calif./Wilson).
Emma Kartheiser (Sr./Oronoco, Minn./Century) added a two-out run-scoring single, and
Amy Chen (Jr./Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) brought home the final two runs with her single to right field.
Faith Hanshaw (Sr./The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands Christian Academy) picked up the victory to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Game 2 Recap
Framingham 14, Carleton 6 (6 inn)
The Knights jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings with five different players contributing RBI singles. The Rams (5-5), however, took full advantage of three Carleton errors in the top of the third inning and exploded for 10 runs.
An RBI grounder got the Knights back a run in their half of the frame, but the deficit was too large to overcome.
Framingham State scored nine unearned runs in the contest and out-hit Carleton, 15-12.
Cunniff had her fifth consecutive multi-hit game, while Schaffer, Avila, Chen, and
Grace Colburn (Fy./Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge) each had three hits on the day.
