Game Recap: Softball |

Knights fall to Amherst but rally past Lawrence

CLERMONT, Fla. – For the second consecutive day, the Carleton College softball split a pair of Spring Break games. The Knights dropped day's first contest, 12-1 (5 inn.) to Amherst College but bounced back to erase a 5-0 deficit en route to a 7-5 triumph over Lawrence University.

Game 1 Recap
Amherst 12, Carleton 1 (5 inn.)
The Mammoths (10-2) led 1-0 before pushing across a combined 11 runs—nine of them unearned—during the third and fourth inning. Uncharacteristically, the Knights (6-2) committed six errors in the two frames.

The Amherst pitching staff handcuffed the Carleton bats as well. Cassie Cunniff (Sr./Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) started the game with a single, but the next hit for the Knights did not come until the fifth inning when Grace Colburn (Fy./Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge) doubled to start a late rally that resulted in Carleton's lone run.

Game 2 Recap
Carleton 7, Lawrence 5
The Vikings (1-7) grabbed the early lead, stringing together four consecutive two-out hits to score twice in the top of the first. They padded their lead with three unearned runs in the third frame.

Carleton began its comeback in the bottom of the third when Cunniff and Bryanna Schaffer (So./San Diego, Calif./Mar Vista) delivered RBI singles.

The Knights still trailed 5-2 when Helen Moses (Jr./Denver, Colo./Denver East) singled and scored on Cunniff's double to the left-centerfield gap. Adriana Wiggins (Fy./Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) followed with a RBI groundout.

Carleton moved in front with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Nikki Marsh (Sr./Salem, Conn./East Lyme) smacked a pinch-hit double, and Faith Hanshaw (Sr./The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands Christian Academy) followed with a single to put runners on the corners with none out. Moses brought home the tying run with a groundout, and Cunniff's triple chased home Hanshaw. Wiggins followed with a run-scoring single to plate Carleton's seventh run of the game.

Hanshaw went the distance in the circle, tossing her third complete game of the season. She allowed only two earned runs over 7.0 innings with no walks and three strikeouts.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will face both Luther College (2:00 p.m. EDT) and Bates College (4:30 p.m. EDT) on Monday, March 20.
