MANKATO, Minn. – The Carleton College men's track & field team got off to a great start at the Ted Nelson Classic with a 1-2-3-4 finish in the day's first event, the 3000-meter run. The Knights ended up fourth of 11 teams and were the top NCAA Division III squad, behind only host Minnesota State (a national-ranked D-II program), St. Thomas (a regionally-ranked D-I team), and Iowa Central (the No. 5 team in NJCAA).
Carleton went 6-for-6 in setting new personal bests for the 3000-meter distance.
Gabe Nichols (Fy./Grove City, Penn./Grove City) won the race with a meet record time of 8:23.01. That ranks him No. 21 on the D-III performance list this season and moves him to fifth in Carleton history.
Roy Llewellyn (Fy./Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) clocked a time of 8:33.73, which is No. 13 in the Carleton annals, while
Elijah Jones (Sr./Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Indy Lyness (Fy./Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) finished third and fourth at 8:40.44 and 8:50.62, respectively. That quartet currently holds the No. 1, No. 2, No. 4, and No. 10 times in the MIAC this season
Jeremy Fong (Sr./Niiza-Shi, Japan/Christian Academy in Japan) posted the MIAC's top this this season while running to a second-place result in the 800-meter run. He reached the line at 1:58.16, an indoor personal best.
Alistair Pattison (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) finished fourth in the same event, clocking the No. 8 time in the MIAC this season (1:59.94).
Josh Meier (So./Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) won his heat in the 1000-meter run with a personal-best time of 2:35.26, tying him for No. 2 in MIAC this season.
Brett Hanley (So./Bellevue, Wash./Newport) finished eighth in the mile run with a time of 4:41.60, taking nearly four seconds off his previous collegiate best.
Carleton's other top result came in the pole vault, where
Tim Adams (So./Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) placed fifth after clearing 3.88 meters to establish a new personal record.
