NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Carleton College men's track & field team hosted their lone home meet of the indoor season—the Meet of the Hearts—on Saturday and finished second out of seven teams. The Knights competed in 11 of the 17 events, resulting in seven victories and three additional runner-up results.
"We had an unreal day today," said Carleton head coach
Dave Ricks. "It was one of the best performances for a Carleton Men's Track team in the events in which we competed. I am so proud of the way that we competed and carried ourselves today.
"We had a nice group of parents that were able to make it to the meet, and watched all of the excitement."
That excitement began with Carleton's first event of the day, the mile run, where the home team claimed a 1-2-3 finish in field of 32 runners, a race that was led out at a scorching pace.
Gabe Nichols (Fy./Grove City, Penn./Grove City), owner of the 14th-best mile in D-III this year, flew to a 4:13.37 time and a victory. That time was 9 seconds better than time of the second-place finisher, teammate
Roy Llewellyn's (Fy./Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North)
4:22.91.
Elijah Jones (Sr./Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) rounded out the podium for Carleton at 4:23.42.
The 55-meter hurdles also ended with a Carleton win, with
Ian Mortensen (Jr./Seattle, Wash./Shorecrest) pacing the field with a time of 8.55 seconds. He notched a career best in the event, beating a previous record by 0.02 seconds.
Alistair Pattison (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) gave Carleton its third win of the day, crossing the finish line first in the 600-meter run in 1:23.48. He established a new collegiate best in the event and now ranks No. 3 in the MIAC this season and No. 8 all-time at Carleton.
Josh Meier (So./Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) took home first place in the 800m, with a personal-best time of 1:55.61. That is the fastest finish in the MIAC this season and moves him into 11th place on Carleton's all-time performance list.
Jeremy Fong (Sr./Niiza-Shi, Japan/Christian Academy in Japan) and
Indy Lyness (Fy./Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) continued the Knights' run of middle distance dominance, finishing 1-2 in the 1000-meter run with personal best times of 2:33.64 and 2:34.36, respectively. Those are the two fastest performances in the MIAC this season.
Henry Bowman (Sr./Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) finished second in the 3000-meter run, clocking a PR time of 8:27.59 that ranks No. 2 in the conference this winter, No. 8 in Carleton annals, and No. 30 in Division III this season.
Chris Melville (Jr./Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) took third in the same race with a time of 8:42.04, good for seventh in the MIAC this season.
Liam Kennedy (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) had a pair of PRs as he finished second in both the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash. He won his heat in each event, crossing the line at 23.94 and 52.47, respectively.
Carleton's other top-5 result on the track came from
Theo Demetriades (Fy./Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic School), who finished fifth in the 55-meter sprint at a personal-best 7.01 seconds.
Over on the field side, the Knights only participated in the pole vault but came away with two more podium finishes. Mortenson cleared the bar at 4.17 meters to finish first, and
Tim Adams' (So./Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) mark of 3.67 meters was good enough for second, almost half a meter above the third-place finisher.
To close out the day, the Knights sprinted to their seventh and most dramatic win of the meet, prevailing in the 4x400m relay. Kennedy, Pattison, Fong, and Meier ended with a time of 3:28.40. Carleton trailed Macalester by nearly 10 meters at one point, but Fong closed the gap and Meier sprinted into the lead after taking the final exchange, allowing the Knights to win by nearly 1.7 seconds.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton heads across town for the St. Olaf Tostrud Classic on Saturday, Feb. 18. That will be the final tune up before the MIAC Championships the following week.
