NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's track & field team won two events at two different meets on Saturday. Henry Bowman (Sr./Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) won the 5000-meter run at the Mark Shuck Open hosted by Minnesota State-Mankato, while Ian Mortensen (Jr./Seattle, Wash./Shorecrest) took top honors at the St. Olaf Invitational heptathlon
 
Mortensen posted a personal-best total of 4,370 points and ranks No. 5 all time at Carleton. He sits atop the MIAC leaderboard this season and is No. 25 in NCAA Division III for the 2023 indoor season. Mortensen finished first or second in all seven events., including PRs in four events: the 60-meter dash (7.42), 60-meter hurdles (9.17), high jump (1.75 meters), and shot put (11.86 meters).
 
Bowman won the 5K by nearly 14.5 seconds with his personal-best time of 14:55.52, which ranks him No. 2 in the MIAC this winter. Carleton runners have now won the 5K at the Mark Schuck Open every year since 2018.
 
While Bowman won the event, Chris Melville (Jr./Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) took third in the same race, clocking a time of 15:15.92, while Ben Aoki-Sherwood (Sr./Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) finished sixth at 15:51.09. Both of them also set new personal bests for the indoor 5K.
 
Carleton finished sixth out of 12 teams at the Mark Schuck Open. Seven of the entered squads came from NCAA Division II.
 
"We really loaded up our athletes this weekend, as many of them either doubled or tripled in events," said Carleton head coach Dave Ricks. "We took advantage of the long time schedule, allowing for enough recovery time to compete in multiple events.
 
"It was really an outstanding performance by our team."
 
In the mile run, Gabe Nichols (Fy./Grove City, Penn./Grove City) took third place at 4:12.26, shaving 5.3 seconds off his previous personal best. That is a new team freshmen record, ranks him No. 4 all-time at Carleton and moves him to No. 6 on the national performance list.
 
A total of nine Knights set new PRs in the mile, including Roy Llewellyn (Fy./Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North), who finished sixth with a time of 4:17.30, a whopping 9.4 seconds improvement from earlier this season. He ranks No. 31 on the national list and moved into third place on the Knights' rookie leaderboard.
 
Indy Lyness (Fy./Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) and Elijah Jones (Sr./Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) are fourth and fifth in the MIAC this season after clocking PR times of 4:20.80 and 4:21.42, respectively.
 
The Knights registered six additional top-8 results:
• In the 600-meter run, Jeremy Fong (Sr./Niiza-Shi, Japan/Christian Academy in Japan) won his heat and finished third overall with a time of 1:25.33. Alistair Pattison (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) finished fourth in 1:25.72. Both Knights set new personal bests for the event.
• Lyness took part in his first collegiate 800-meter race and placed second at 1:59.41, only 0.4 second from the lead. Nichols and Josh Meier (So./Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) ran to fourth and fifth place results, respectively, with times of 2:00.14 and 2:00.19.
• Carleton's entry in the 4x400-meter relay was comprised of Pattison, Fong, Meier, and Liam Kennedy (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central). The quartet placed sixth at 3:31.72

Carleton will compete at the Ted Nelson Classic on Saturday, Feb. 4. That meet is also hosted by Minnesota State University-Mankato.
