NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's track & field team began the season on Friday evening at the Ole Opener. The Knights had athletes entered in nine events and won seven of those, including four by rookies.
 
"This was a really fun way to start the season with a very short road trip across the river and with both the men's and women's teams competing well," said Carleton head coach Dave Ricks. "Bill Huyck would have been proud of the way both teams competed tonight."
 
Liam Kennedy (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) and Ian Mortensen (Jr./Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) placed 1-2 in the 400-meter dash, clocking times of 54.79 and 55.24, respectively.
 
Reese Anderson (Fy./Frontenac, Minn./Lake City) crossed the line at 1:24.76 as he paced a 1-2-3 finish for the Knights in the 600-meter run.
 
Jeremy Fong (Sr./Niiza-Shi, Japan/Christian Academy in Japan) added a victory in the 800-meter run as he covered the distance in a MIAC-leading time of 2:01.20.
 
Gabe Nichols (Fy./Grove City, Penn./Grove City) was a double victor. He was the top finisher in the 1000-meter run, posting a nearly seven-second margin of victory as he clocked a time of 2:35.67. He was also first to the line in the 3000-meter run, posting a time of 8:45.06.
 
With a time of 4:26.45, Indy Lyness (Fy./Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) headed up Carleton's 1-2-3 finish in the mile run.
 
Carleton capped off the meet by prevailing in the 4x400-meter relay as Alistair Pattison (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./Como Park), Fong, Josh Meier (So./Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge), and Anderson combined on a time of 3:31.41.

Carleton heads to Macalester College for the Vanessa Seljeskog Classic on Saturday, Jan. 21. Field events are slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. with racing on the track starting at 11:00 a.m.
