Knights extend academic recognition streak; nine players tabbed ITA Scholar-Athletes

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Carleton College women's tennis program and a team record-tying nine players have been cited for academic excellence by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). This was the 21st consecutive academic award for the Knights, and they are 1 of only 2 MIAC tennis programs—male or female—to receive this award every year since its inception in 2002.

Given to ITA member programs with a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, the All-Academic Team award recognizes outstanding academic achievement during the 2021-22 season. Nine Knights earned individual accolades as ITA Scholar-Athletes as they owned at least a 3.50 GPA for the recently completed academic year. This is the third consecutive year with at least seven individual honorees, and this year's total matches the program record set back in 2003.

This year's group of individual winners are: Sydney Bell '23 (Lafayette, Calif./Acalanes); Piper Brown '25 (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Porter-Gaud); Mary Frances Hose '24 (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge); Alisa Makatsaria '23 (New York, N.Y./Singapore American School); Mariam Nechiporuk '25 (Portland, Ore./Lake Oswego); Zoe Rose '25 (Tacoma, Wash./Charles Wright Academy); Miriam Shteyman '25 (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata); Taylor Thulson '22 (Louisville, Colo./Niwot); and Lingyu Wei '23 (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Weiyu High School).

Thulson took home Scholar-Athlete honors all four years at Carleton, while Makatsaria garnered her third consecutive award. Bell, Hose, and Wei earned the second Scholar-Athlete nods of their collegiate careers, with the other four Knights receiving their first career academic award from the ITA.

With the Carleton men also garnering the ITA's All-Academic Team Award, this marked the 11th straight year and the 19th time over the last 21 seasons that both Knight tennis programs captured the ITA All-Academic Team Award. Over that same span, the other dozen MIAC schools won the award for both men's and women's tennis in the same year only 33 combined times.
