Nayeli Williams wins long jump as Knights sit fifth after Day 1 of the MIAC Outdoor Championships

WINONA, Minn. – Nayeli Williams' (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./Brooklyn Center) victory in the long jump and Clara Mayfield's (Jr./Manhattan, Kan./Manhattan) runner-up result in the 10,000-meter run were the top performances for the Carleton College women's track & field team on day 1 of the 2022 MIAC Outdoor Championships.

Williams waited until her final attempt of the long jump to post the winning distance of 5.49 meters, a new personal best. She became the fourth Carleton woman to win the MIAC's outdoor long jump competition, joining Lisa Hawkinson (1984), Busola Akinwale (1997), and Amelia Campbell (2014). Sydney Marsh (Sr./Austin, Minn./Austin) matched her personal best and added a fifth-place result to take home all-conference honorable mention after measuring 5.30 meters.

On an evening when the 10,000-meter run was pushed back until sunset, Mayfield finished second with a time of 34:58.96. Both she and event winner Fiona Smith bested the previous facility record by more than 39 seconds.

Carleton's team score also receives a bump after Grace Blanchette (Jr./Honolulu , Hawaii/Punahou) and Marsh finished third and fourth, respectively, at last week's MIAC Heptathlon.

On Friday, several Knights qualified for Saturday's event finals on the track:
• Williams won her prelim heat of the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.74.
• Williams also punched her ticket to the finals of the 400-meter hurdles after winning her preliminary heat with a tie of 1:08.15.
Amy Kropp (Sr./Logan, Utah/Logan) turned in the fourth-fastest prelim time (2:21.95) during the 800-meter run.
• Jocelyn Ferguson (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South) had the fifth-fastest time (personal best 59.37) during the 400-meter dash preliminary round.
• Nell Schafer (Jr./Oakland, Calif./Oakland Technical) grabbed the last spot in the 1,500-meter run after clocking 5:00.80 in the prelims.
