SAUK CENTRE, Minn. – The Carleton College men's golf team sent four players to participate in the Saint John's Winter Classic, the first of two separate 18-hole tournaments this weekend. Playing with no margin of error, the Knights took 13th of 16 teams.
Playing in windy conditions, Carleton finished with a team score of 326, the squad's highest score of the 2021-22 season. Tournament host Saint John's (293) posted a one-stroke victory over UW-Eau Claire (294) and ended up two shots better than Gustavus Adolphus.
The Knights were among the field's top squads when it came to playing the par 3s, and leading the way was
Eldon Spencer (Jr./Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) who was tied for third-best on the day at 1-over on those four holes.
Spencer and
Anderson Murphy (Jr./Coral Gables, Fla./Ransom Everglades) paced the Knights as each carded a score of 78 (+6). Spencer had four birdies, while Murphy recorded the team's lone eagle of the round.
Ryan Choi (Fy./Cockeysville. Md./Dulaney) also had four birdies but a few tough holes for him led to an uncharacteristic round of 83.
Bob Zhu (So./Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) rounded out the scoring for Carleton at 87
