WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –
Clara Mayfield (Jr./Manhattan, Kan./Manhattan) and
Katherine Geist (So./Crookston, Minn./Crookston) both claimed All-American status as the Carleton College women's track & field duo placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the finals of the mile run at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday. Two hours after competing in that event, Mayfield was back on the track for the 3000-meter run and finished 14th of 20 runners.
In the mile, Mayfield crossed the line at 4:52.92, just off her school-record time established two weeks ago at the conference championships. Geist finished in 4:56.78 to set a new personal best. Ella Baran of Johns Hopkins won the event with a time of 4:47.97.
These results mark the 22nd and 23rd indoor All-America performances in team history and are the program's top two mile finishes at the indoor national meet. Meg Mathison had the Knights' only other All-America result for the indoor mile, and she finished eighth in 2018.
This is the first All-America Award in Geist's collegiate career and the fourth for Mayfield, who previously won a pair of honors in cross country (30th place in 2019 and 10th place in 2021). Mayfield was also an All-American for the indoor 5K in 2020 but did not get to compete at the national indoor championships that year as the COVID-19 pandemic began canceling NCAA events that week.
Mayfield was 1 of only 3 runners who raced the finals of the mile and 3K at this year's national indoor meet. In the longer race, she posted a time of 10:01.32. Kassie Parker of Loras College, who did not race another event on Saturday, won the race with a time of 9:43.81.
