NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Seniors
Stephen Lavey (Sr./Cedar Grove, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium),
Ben Perry (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn),
Bridger Rives (Sr./Skiatook, Okla./Bishop Kelley), and
Ben Santos (Sr./Boulder, Colo./Boulder) were among the point scorers for the Carleton College men's track & field team as the Knights maintained their positioning and finished fifth out of 11 teams at the MIAC Indoor Championships.
"The seniors did a great job in holding the team together through one more pandemic year," said Carleton head coach
Dave Ricks. "Basically half of their collegiate athletic career was spent with the limitations of the pandemic. I'm really proud of how disciplined they have trained and how hard they have competed."
Saint John's won its first conference indoor title, totaling 185 points. Concordia (139 points), St. Olaf (106), Bethel (91) and Carleton (75) rounded out the top five.
The Knights' first point of the day came in the high jump as
Aravindh Subramanian (Jr./Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick) placed eighth after matching his career best by clearing 1.86 meters.
"I was very happy to see Aravindh score in the high jump," said Ricks. "He works so hard in practice, that we really enjoyed seeing his success. He's the kind of student-athlete that you really want to cheer for. The good thing is that we have a good number of team members that fit that same mold."
Rives captured all-conference honorable mention as he finished fourth in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:24.47.
The 1000-meter run saw
Ethan Ash (So./Oakland, Calif./Head-Royce School) place fourth at 2:32.49 to garner All-MIAC honorable mention. Perry also scored in the event, bettering his previous personal best by more than two seconds as he crossed the line seventh at 2:33.42.
The 3000-meter run saw Lavey, Santos, and
Adam Nakasaka (Sr./Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) contest their last races at Carleton's Recreation Center. Lavey picked up all-conference honorable mention thanks to a fourth-place result at 8:28.22. Santos placed seventh at 8:40.08, and
Chris Melville (So./Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) grabbed the last scoring spot by edging Nakasaka at the line. Melville smashed his previous PR in the event by a whopping 14 seconds as he crossed the line at 8:40.45, just ahead of Nakasaka's 8:40.71, which also established a new personal best.
The three-day meet concluded with the 4x400-meter relay, with Carleton's quartet of
Liam Kennedy (So./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central), Rives,
Josh Meier (Fy./Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge), and Ash placing fifth at 3:27.30 and earning All-MIAC honorable mention.
"We had a pretty hectic season dealing with illness and some minor injuries," noted Ricks. "The good thing is that we are all healthy right now and looking forward to a brief celebratory break before starting to gear up for the outdoor season."
