NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's indoor track & field team won seven events overall—including two apiece for
Clara Mayfield (Jr./Manhattan, Kan./Manhattan) and
Sydney Marsh (Sr./Austin, Minn./Austin)—as the Knights hosted the Carleton Triangular on Friday evening. Mayfield broke the team indoor record in winning the mile and broke the facility record in the process.
"In every event, the athletes continued to put forth tremendous effort and demonstrated that this team is willing to give their best every time they step into competition," said Carleton head coach
Donna Ricks.
In winning the mile, Mayfield's time of 4:53.68 eclipsed the school record set by Meg Mathison (4:57.87) at the Wartburg Last Chance meet 2018 as well as the Recreation Center standard held by Marie Borner of Bethel University (4:54.44) since the 2010 MIAC Indoor Championships.
"As soon as the gun went off Clara immediately took command of the mile, practices indicated that she was ready to run a strong race, but to run the fastest time in D-III so far this season just blew us out of the water." Ricks Said. "It was a race for the record book, and one that I will remember for a long time."
Teammate
Katherine Geist (So./Crookston, Minn./Crookston) took advantage of the strong competition and clocked a time of 5:07.73, which currently ranks No. 7 in Division III this season.
Mayfield returned to the track later in the evening and completed her double with a triumph in the 800-meter run, registering a personal best time of 2:20.94, which is also 12th in the country at this time.
Marsh nabbed the top spot in two field events. She won the high jump with a height of 1.40 meters and soared 3.07 meters to win the pole vault.
Audrey Parrott (Fy./Green Isle, Minn./Sibley East) and
Thea Traw (Fy./Portland, Ore./Catlin Gabel) finished 1-2 in the 400-meter dash. Parrot clocked a time of 1:05.61, while Traw crossed the line at 1:06.45 to rank the duo No. 4 and No. 6 in the MIAC so far this season.
Jocelyn Ferguson (So./Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South) won the 600-meter run with a time of 1:41.07, tops in the conference this winter.
Nayeli Williams (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./Brooklyn Center) showed her versatility by capturing first place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.96, second in the 200-meter dash (27.86), and third in the long jump (5.02 meters).
Phoebe Ward (So./Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) added Carleton's other top-2 result when she posted a time of 10:51.93 in the 3000-meter run.
Neenah Bosman (So./Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake) climbed to fourth in team history as she registered a distance of 13.45 meters in the weight throw. That was a full meter farther than she measured the week before.
Carleton finished 2nd of 4 teams, totaling 176 points. St. Olaf College won the team competition with 237 points, while Hamline University was third at 115 points. The University of St. Thomas (NCAA Division I) sent a half-dozen runners to the meet and finished with 17 points.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will send Marsh to the St. Olaf Pentathlon next Saturday, Jan. 29. Other members of the team will compete at the Mark Schuck Open hosted by Minnesota State-Mankato.
"It is early in the season and right now I want the athletes to learn from each race, work together, and enjoy it."
