Jancyn Appel (Jr./Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) totaled 25 kills as the Carleton College volleyball team went 1-1 on its first day of a weekend trip to the Hawkeye State. The Knights bested Luther College 3-1 in the opener and fell to Edgewood College by the same score later in the evening.

Carleton (2-1) prevailed in a tight tussle against Luther, a match that featured 47 ties and 26 lead changes in the four sets, each of which was determined by no more than three points. At no moment did either side lead by more than four points. The Knights prevailed by a score of 25-23, 25-22, 24-26, and 28-26.
Appel hit a career-best .583 as she collected 15 kills. That is the best attack percentage by a Knight since early in the 2017 campaign.
Annelise Sokolow (So./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) contributed 14 kills, and
Grace Perret (Fy./Green Bay, Wis./Preble) accounted for a dozen kills.
Inger Shelton (Sr./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) tallied 47 assists, tied for her career best over four sets.
Perret notched a double-double as she led the defense with 14 digs, while
Kennedy Bombei (Fy./Solon, Iowa/Solon) registered 12 digs. Appel paced the squad with a trio of solo blocks.

The Eagles (3-0) claimed the 25-18, 26-24, 21-25, 25-22 result thanks in part in 13 service aces.
Sokolow posted her second double-double of the young season with a team-best 12 kills to go along with 10 digs, matching the total of Bombei. Appel figured in five blocks and accounted for 10 more kills, helping Shelton accumulate 36 assists.
Edgewood closed the opening set with an 11-4 run then fended off set point in the next game. Perret had two key aces late in the third set as Carleton stayed alive, but the Eagles used an 8-1 spurt midway through the fourth set to take control of the match.

Carleton heads to Waverly, Iowa, for day two of the tournament. The Knights will face Wartburg College at 11:00 a.m. followed by a 1:00 p.m. match versus Milwaukee School of Engineering.
