Knights wrap up play at ITA Midwest Regional

WHITEWATER, Wis. – With two more victories on Sunday, Mary Frances Hose (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) advanced to the final of the singles draw at the ITA Midwest Regional. The tournament began on Friday, so the Carleton College sophomore—who was seeded No. 2 in the bracket—elected not to miss additional class time on Monday and instead chose to forego the opportunity to play the finals against No. 6 seed Sabrina Tang of Grinnell College.

Sydney Bell (Jr./Lafayette, Calif./Acalanes) and Alisa Makatsaria (Jr./New York, N.Y./Singapore American School) also played in the singles draw. Additionally, the two juniors teamed up for an appearance in the doubles draw.

The singles draw at the ITA Regional included 96 players from across Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Fifty tandems appeared in the doubles draw.

Bell came up short in her first-round singles match against Rachel Lindrud of Gustavus, falling 7-6 (3), 6-2. Meanwhile, Makatsaria received an opening-round bye before being edged in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 by Madalyn Biegelow of tournament host UW-Whitewater.

In doubles on Friday afternoon, Bell and Makatsaria lost a nailbiter to Anna Wanek and Emily King of Simpson College 8-7 when the Knights' duo came up short 7-3 in the tiebreaker.

Hose won all five singles matches she played on the weekend. After receiving a first-round bye, she began the tournament with a shutout of Maggie Frye of Saint Mary's University.

On Saturday, Hose opened the day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over No. 23 Clare Palen of UW-Eau Claire and then notched a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Natalia Smith of Luther College.

In Sunday morning's quarterfinal round, Hose took down another ranked opponent, this time besting No. 5 Simona Potockova of Gustavus Adolphus by a 6-0, 6-3 tally. The day concluded with Hose's stiffest challenge of the tournament as she earn a berth in the finals following a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 semifinal triumph over No. 15 Irene Agusti of Grinnell. That result set up the difficult decision to skip the finals on Monday.
