WAVERLY, Iowa – The Carleton College volleyball team lost both its matches at the Wartburg Invitational on Saturday. The Knights fell 3-1 to Coe College (Iowa) before dropping a straight-set contest to the No. 10-ranked tournament host Wartburg.

Carleton (3-12) dropped the first match of the weekend by scores of 15-19, 27-29, 18-25, 22-25.

The Knights jumped out front in the match, earning a 25-19 win in the first set and looked poised to take a 2-0 in the second. Carleton fought off three set-point opportunities from the Kohawks and had two set-point opportunities of their own at 26-25 and 27-26 late in the set. Coe rallied to score the ensuing three points, however, to square the match at 1-1. Coe used the momentum to win the next two sets and earn a 3-1 match victory.Â

Jancyn Appel (Jr./Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School), and
Annelise Sokolow (So./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) had 12 kills apiece to pace Carleton as the Knights put together a .220 hitting percentage. Appel led the Knights with six blocks.

Inger Shelton (Sr./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) tallied 39 assists, nine digs, four kills, and two aces in the match.
Kennedy Bombei (Fy./Solon, Iowa/Solon) paced the defense with 17 digs.

Grace Perret (Fy./Green Bay, Wis./Preble) chipped in with seven kills and 13 digs, while
Grace de Benedetti (Sr./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) added seven kills and five digs.
Catie Marvin (So./Wilmington, Del./The Tatnall School) recorded eight kills.

Wartburg Match Recap
In a rematch from when the two teams faced each other earlier this season, Carleton came up short by a 25-16, 25-13, 25-9 tally against the No. 10-ranked Knights from Iowa.

Appel led Carleton with 11 kills and hit .250, while Shelton tallied 19 assists. Sokolow led the Knights with 10 digs.Â

Carleton will travel to New Ulm, Minn. on Wednesday to face Martin Luther College at 7 p.m.
