MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. --
Ethan Tun (Fy./Potomac, Md./Landon) burst onto the scene by winning three individual events in this collegiate debut as the Carleton College men's swimming & diving team opened the 2021-22 season with a third-place result at the Augsburg Invitational, the first day of intercollegiate racing for anyone on the Carleton roster in 617 days—dating back to Feb. 15, 2020, the final day of that year's conference meet.
Teagan Johnson (Jr./Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) registered the Knights' other event victory on Sunday.
Saint John's University (455 points) won the team competition, followed by Carthage College (384.5 points), Carleton (368.5), and St. Olaf College (245).
"This meet was exactly what we needed to kick off this season," said Carleton head coach
Andy Clark. "With half our team being new to collegiate competition and the other half having finished their last season at the 2020 MIAC Championships, it was truly fitting to have our first meet of this season back at the Jean Freeman Aquatic Center. We had quite a few expectations going into this meet, and both teams delivered. We are still early in the season, but the coaches are excited about what we saw today with team energy and the efforts put out by each team member, both in the pool and on the boards."
Tun prevailed in the 100-and 200-yard backstrokes as well as the 200-yard IM, clocking times of 53.69, 1:59.08, and 1:59.72, respectively.
Carl Zhang (Jr./Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) was the runner up in the 200 back with his time of 2:00.34.
Johnson and
Kevin Chen (Jr./Normal, Ill./Normal Community) finished 1-2 in the 200-yard IM, touching the wall at 2:19.33 and 2:22.59, respectively.
The Knights had three other second-place finishes:
• Zhang, Chen, Tun, and
Josh Wu (So./Germantown, Wis./Germantown) combined on a time of 1:38.75 in the 200-yard medley relay.
• Chen finished the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:02.43.
•
Aidan Jalili (Fy./Burlington, Vt./Lawrenceville), Wu,
Allen Yuan (Sr./Cary, N.C./Raleigh Charter), and
Morgann Rene (So./Singapore, Singapore/United World College Of Southeast Asia) totaled 1:29.64 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
