Knights take down Norse in straight sets

DECORAH, Iowa— Behind team-highs of 12 kills and nine digs from Annelise Sokolow (So./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic), the Carleton College volleyball team earned a three-set sweep (25-20, 25-19, 25-16) over Luther College in non-conference play on Saturday.

The Knights (5-13) pulled ahead mid-way through the first set and never looked back en route to a 25-20 win in the opening stanza. The second set featured more of the same for Carleton, as the Knights won five consecutive points, punctuated by a block from Sokolow and Jancyn Appel (Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) to take a 16-11 lead. The Norse rallied with a scoring run of their own, before a kill from Grace Perret (Fy./Green Bay, Wis./Preble) followed by a service ace from Kennedy Bombei (Fy./Solon, Iowa) put the Knights in front by a score of 19-16. Carleton won six out of the set's final eight points to earn a 25-19 set win and 2-0 match lead.

Poised to close out the match in short order, the Knights jumped in front early in the third set and led 14-7 after an ace from Perrett. Carleton eventually closed the set out 25-16 and earned their second non-conference win in four days.

Carleton hit .258 for the day compared to .112 for Luther. The Knights held a 34-27 advantage in kills during the match.

Shelton paced Carleton with 28 assists, while adding seven digs and an ace. Perret tallied nine kills to go along with a .280 hitting percentage, while Appel claimed eight kills and hit .353. Bombei added eight digs and an ace.
