Senior Spotlight: Ruthie Boyd

The PEAR Department is taking this opportunity to recognize and celebrate the seniors on our spring sports teams. While we are sad that we were unable to watch them compete this season, we are excited about what the future holds for each of them. Keep checking back in the coming weeks as we take the time to highlight each of these individuals. Click here for our Senior Spotlight archive.

Varsity sports played at Carleton:
Outdoor Track (2 years), Indoor Track (2 years), Cross Country (4 years)

Hometown:
Breckenridge, Colo.

Major:
Sociology/Anthropology

What are your plans after graduation?
I am serving as an Americorps VISTA at a public health-focused nonprofit in Telluride, Colorado.

What was your favorite sports moment at Carleton?
My favorite sports moment at Carleton was the conference cross country meet my sophomore fall. The race felt special, in the way that running for your TEAMmates often does. After crossing the line, not only did we have so many individual performances to celebrate, but also a collective victory and a record-breaking low TEAM score!

Why did you choose Carleton?
I chose Carleton for its academics and also for the amazing and inspiring people I met when I toured.

Outside of athletics, what will you miss most about Carleton?
I will miss the people who I've met here so, so much. I will also miss the Arb, and being able to enjoy beautiful Minnesota with my friends and teammates!

What else has your Carleton experience included?
I studied abroad in Costa Rica my junior spring and completed two externships with nonprofits in the Twin Cities. I was also part of ECO (Environmental Carls Organized) and Swipe Out Hunger!

What is one piece of advice you would give to prospective student-athletes?
Make friends on your team, and also friends outside of your team! All of the new connections you'll make are valuable and help you learn in different ways.

What is a favorite memory you have of your head coach?
Donna is always so full of energy and enthusiasm. Once, before a cross country race at St. Olaf, I remember walking into the venue where they were playing "Dancing in September," and Donna and I just sang to this song as we walked towards the start! I remember feeling relieved from the pre-race nerves in this moment, remembering what Donna always tells us: go out there and have fun.

Quote from Coach Donna Ricks:
"Ruthie is a very caring and nurturing leader. She has overcome obstacles and as a result has strengthened our team."
