Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Knights tame Cougars, 5-0, in season opener

MORRIS, Minn. – After playing a scoreless first half, the Carleton College men's soccer team tallied five goals after intermission and notched a 5-0 road triumph at University of Minnesota Morris. Playing his first collegiate game, sophomore Tonny Aton (Nairobi, Kenya) scored three times in the first 14 minutes after intermission to spark the offense.

The Knights (1-0-0) controlled the run of play over the first 45 minutes but were kept off the scoreboard. Eli Venetis (Fy./New York, N.Y./Collegiate School) nearly broke the deadlock when his shot clanged off the crossbar in the 26th minute.

Carleton finally broke through in the 47th minute. Brennan Johnson (Jr./Portland, Ore./Grant) received a pass from Justin Crawmer (Fy./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) and drove to the middle. Johnson slide the ball behind the back line to Aton on a diagonal run, setting up a one-touch shot over the keeper.

Three minutes later the same duo teamed up for a similar result. Johnson beat his defender at the top of the box and slipped the ball to Aton for a close-range smash home.

In the 59th minute, Aton pounced on a loose ball in the box and one-timed a shot past the keeper. Aton took only three shots in the contest, but all three found the back of the net for Carleton's first hat trick since Peter Passalino '17 accomplished the feat on Oct. 12, 2013.

Joe Petrini (Fy./Brooklyn, N.Y./Packer Collegiate) and Kellan Pinson (So./Portland, Ore./Westview) added insurance goals with long-range scores in the 77th and 90th minutes, respectively.

Goalkeepers Aaron Forman (Jr./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School), Ethan Saucedo (Fy./Agoura Hills, Calif.), and Elliot Hanson (Fy./Evanston, Ill./Evanston) combined on the shutout.

Carleton will host Lawrence University on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m.
