Decorah, Iowa--Katrina Wood (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) notched her fourth top 10 in four starts this season and Laura Knutson (Edina, Minn.) added her third top 10 of the year as the Carleton College women's golf team tied for fifth at the Luther Invitational.
Wood posted a nine-over 81 and Knutson an 11-over par 83 as the Knights tied 15th-ranked Simpson College at 348. Tenth-ranked Wartburg College (Iowa) won the 18-hole, one-day event 316, followed by NAIA scholarship school St. Ambrose at 342 and host Luther at 345. Coe College (Iowa) finished one shot ahead of the Knights and Simpson.
"We didn't play poorly, but one one really played well today," Carleton head coach Eric Sieger said. "We did a pretty good job of grinding out a decent score, but we left a lot of shots out there, especially around the greens. We were hoping for a little better finish, but at the same time to come out and struggle with our swings and still post a decent score is a good sign for such a young team."
Senior Sarah Ingebritsen (Sr./Spokane, Wash./Lewis & Clark) rebounded from a rough front nine to fire a six-over par 42 on the back and finish at 91. Rookies Louise Buckler (Blaine, Minn./St. Paul Academy) and Meghan Gajare (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central) ended up at 93.
"As a team we didn't make many putts, although I felt like we hit a lot of good putts," Sieger said. "Sometimes golf is like that, and it just wasn't our day."
The Knights now turn their attention to their lone home tournament in the fall, which they host at Troy Burne Golf Club in Hudson, Wis. Four top 25 teams, according to the latest Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association poll, will tee it up, along with five other teams that received votes in the poll.
"It's a great field on perhaps the toughest course that any Division III event will see this year, and we're looking forward to the challenge," Sieger said.
