NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The No. 16-ranked Carleton College women's golf team delivered a dominant performance on Saturday, firing a 13-over-par team total to claim the top spot on the leaderboard after the opening round of the Northfield Open.

Competing at Willinger's Golf Club, the Knights navigated a challenging layout to build a substantial 22-stroke lead over their nearest competitors. St. Catherine University sits in second place at +35, while Gustavus Adolphus rounds out the top three at +39.

The Knights' balanced attack saw all seven players placed inside the top 15, including four of the top six players on the individual opening round leaderboard to keep the Knights well ahead of the 44-golfer field.

Cynthia Lu finished her round four-under-par over the final three holes to card a tournament-best 73 (+1) and sit atop the individual standings.  Lu's round was highlighted by four birdies and an eagle on the day.  Carter Sichol followed Lu with an opening round 74 (+2) to sit in solo second. Sichol used a steady round with 12 pars to post matching 37's on each nine. 

Anna Lee and Sarah Zheng came next.  The teammates are tied for third with rounds of five-over-par 77 on Saturday.  Lee was consistent throughout with a two-over 38 on the front and a three-over 39 on the back.  Zheng overcame a pair of double-bogies by sinking birdies on the seventh and ninth holes to highlight her round.  Natalie Tatar rounded out the starting lineup with an opening round 82 (+10) on the day.  The senior posted matching 41's on each nine-hole stretch to sit tied for 15th.

Mindy Zhai and Kate Yi both competed as individuals on Saturday.  Zhai played her way into the top 10 with an opening round 79 (+7).  She was just two-over at the turn before putting up a five-over 41 on the back nine to place her tied for eighth.  Yi put together a nine-over-par 81 to sit in a tie for 13th headed to Sunday's final round.

The tournament shifts to The Legacy Golf Club in Faribault, Minn., for the second and final round on Sunday. Tee times are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. as the Knights look to secure the invite title and build momentum heading into the final events of the spring season.
