Knights fall to No. 20 Gustavus in MIAC Playoffs Championship

Box Score ST. PETER, Minn. – The No. 43-ranked Carleton College women's tennis team fell 4-0 to No 20-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in the championship match of the MIAC Playoffs.

This was a familiar match-up in the finals of the conference tournament as the Knights (14-6) and Gusties (26-5) met in the playoff championship for the 11th time since 2007. The two programs have combined to win 17 of the 19 MIAC Women's Tennis Playoff Championships with Carleton claiming nine titles and Gustavus now winning 10 crowns.

Gustavus earned the doubles team point thanks to 6-1 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with the No. 1 doubles battle between Carleton's Giana Marks and Ryann Witter versus the nationally-ranked pairing of Karina Elvestrom and Kaya De Bruijn left unfinished.

The Gusties then picked up 6-2, 6-0 wins by Molly Austin and Noor Omar over Witter and Peggy Fu, respectively, at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

The match ended after Elvestrom—who is regionally ranked in singles—secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Marks atop the lineup.

Carleton was faring better in the three matches left unfinished. Kat Smiricinschi sent the No. 6 singles match the distance, battling back after dropping the first set 6-4 to capture the second set 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Kiley Pickens led the second set 5-2 after falling 6-4 in a tight first set.
