Carter Sichol wins, Knights second at St. Kates/Carleton Final Fling

LAKE CITY, Minn. – The Carleton women's golf team shot a blistering five-over-par 297 in the final round of the St. Kates/Carleton Final Fling Sunday afternoon at The Jewel Golf Club to finish second in the team standings.  Junior Carter Sichol shot a three-under-par 70 to give her a two-day total of 144 (-2) and earn her medalist honors.

The score was Carleton's best relative to par of the season and gave the Knights solo second behind St. Catherine in the standings. The Knights close the regular season as the 29th-ranked team in the country and will await to hear if any members of the team will be selected to participate in the NCAA Championships.

Sichol got off to a tough start with a bogey on Sunday's opening hole.  In fact, every Carleton player would card bogey or worse on hole number one throughout the day.  She was two-over-par through three holes before she turned on the jets and played the best 14-hole stretch of her career.  The Winnetka, Ill., native went on to tally five birdies and an eagle, while only suffering a pair of bogeys on the way to a three-under 70, tying her career-low round (relative to par).  Her two-round total of 144 placed her two-under-par for the tournament, another career best at tournament's end relative to par.

Mindy Zhai followed with a two-over-par 75.  The Winter Gardens, Fla., native put together a colorful scorecard, posting six birdies and an eagle on the afternoon.  She went out in 39 before finishing strong with a one-under 36 on the back nine.  Combined with yesterday's three-over 76, Zhai put up a two-round total of 151 (+5) to place her in a three-way tie for eighth.

Junior Cynthia Lu matched Zhai with a two-over 75 on Sunday.  Lu was aggressive in the final round, putting up five birdies and an eagle through the first 13 holes.  She finished the round even par over the final five holes to cap an impressive back nine.  With three birdies and a bogey, she capped the round with a two-under 35 and closed the tournament with 163 strokes (+17) and tied for 23rd on the individual leaderboard.

Senior Olivia Siebert finished with the best round of her season and career, relative to par.  The Glencoe, Ill., native posted a four-over-par round of 77 that included three birdies.  After opening the round two-over through the first three holes, she came back to make the turn one-over (37) and was back to even-par through 11 before coming in with a three-over-par 40 on the back nine.  Her two-day total of 160 (+14) placed her in a tie for 22nd on the weekend.

First-year Anna Lee was the final Knight in the starting lineup.  She turned in an eight-over-par 80 after carding a 41 on the front nine and 40 on the back to give her a two-round total of 156 (+10) and earn her a place in a four-way tie for 16th.

Juniors Sarah Zheng and Natalie Tatar represented the Knights as individuals this weekend.  Zheng followed up a one-over 74 in Saturday's opening round with a five-over 78 on Sunday.  After starting four-over through the first three holes, the Bolingbrook, Ill., native played tremendously over the final 15 holes, carding three birdies in a stretch of one-over-par golf to salvage the 78 and sole possession of 11th place in the individual standings.  Tatar played the front nine in one-over-par 37, but a nine-over 46 on the back gave the Denver, Colo., native an 83 (+10) for the day and a tie for 26th place overall.
