EDINA, Minn. — The Carleton women's golf team continued its historic run at the MIAC Championships on Sunday, firing a second-round 298 (+10) to extend its overall lead to 20 strokes at Braemar Golf Course.
The Knights sit at 590 (+14) through two rounds, an MIAC record to this point shattering the previous mark of 602 set by the team in 2018.
Senior standout Carter Sichol led the way again on Sunday. After setting a single-round MIAC Championships record with a three-under 69 in the opening round, she matched her opening-round score with another 3-under 69. A bogey-free front nine got her round off to a great start, a round in which she carded three birdies and an eagle with only two bogeys the entire 18 holes.
Sichol holds the individual lead at 138 (–6) and is the only player in the field under par through 36 holes. That mark breaks the previous 36-hole MIAC record of 146, held by Katie Schenfeld of Gustavus and gives her a seven-stroke lead headed to Monday's final rouond.Â
First-year Kate Yi followed her opening round 71 (-1) with a second round 74 (+2) to bring her two-day total to 145 (+1), tied for second overall. If not for her teammate's record-breaking performance thus far, Yi would now hold the MIAC's 36-hole low score. Yi carded three birdies and finished with an even-par 36 on the back nine to remain tied fir second.
Junior Mindy Zhai sits seventh after following her first-round 74 with an 80 (+8) on Sunday for a two-round total of 154 (+10). Zhai struggled out of the gate on Sunday, but finished strong, playing her final 10 holes just one-over-par to ascertain solo seventh.
Carleton also benefited from strong rounds by junior Sarah Zheng, who rebounded from her first round 81 (+9) with a second-round 76 (+4). Â With Sunday's improvement, Zheng climbs into a tie for ninth at 157 (+13) with teammate senior Cynthia Lu, who posted a 79 (+7) on Sunday to also reach 157 (+13).Â
With Zheng's move into the tie for ninth, all five Carleton players now sit in the top-10 entering Monday's final round, which begins at 9am.Â
