ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Carleton College women's tennis players
Amelia Asfaw and
Mary Hose saw their seasons end with opening-round setbacks at the NCAA Division III Individual Championships.
Â
In singles, Asfaw lost her first-round match 6-1, 6-2 to Wesleyan University's Caitlyn Ferrante, the No. 11-ranked singles player in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). This was the first defeat on the season for Asfaw, who concluded the year 13-1 in solo play.
Â
Asfaw returned to the court later in the day to play alongside Hose, but the Carleton duo was handed a 6-3, 6-3 loss by NYU's Dakota Fordham and Isabella Hartman. Carleton's top pairing finished the year with a 13-2 overall record.
"It was great to see both Amelia and Mary compete against the best Division III tennis players in the country," said Carleton head coach
Luciano Battaglini. "Although they did not have the results they wanted, the experience in competing against the top schools will serve them well as they keep developing their games."
Â
Asfaw and Hose are the first Knights to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships since 2013. They led Carleton to a 15-1 record on the season en route to the MIAC regular-season and postseason titles, while helping the Knights be ranked as high as No. 14 in the nation by the ITA.
