NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Carleton College junior
Luke Harris was named to a pair of All-Region teams for his play during the 2023-24 season, taking home recognition from both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and D3hoops.com.
The Carleton point guard was the only player from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) to be recognized with All-Region status by both groups. The NABC honored 11 players overall from Region IX, and Harris was a 1 of 6 student-athletes tabbed to its All-District First Team. He was a second-team pick for D3hoops.com—the preeminent website covering men's and women's NCAA Division III college basketball—which highlighted 15 total players, five each on its first, second, and third teams.
Harris is 1 of only 4 players across NCAA Division III men's basketball to average at least 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game this season. He is only player from Region IX to tally at least 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per contest.
Previously tabbed the 2023-24 MIAC Offensive Player of the Year, he averaged 20.3 points overall to pace all MIAC players this season. He scored 378 total points during MIAC contests, becoming the first Carleton player to top that category since Zach Johnson in 2008-09. Harris made 128 free throws during conference games, the highest total in the MIAC since 2002 and the fourth-highest figure in recorded conference history. The junior point guard ranks 39th in NCAA Division III in scoring average and is fourth in with 173 made free throws this season.
Harris also ranked fifth in the conference at 3.4 assists overall and 13th with 5.7 rebounds per game. His 2.04 steals were tops in the MIAC, making him and Augsburg's Booker Coplin (2018-19 season) the only players since 2000 to pace the conference in both points and steals for the same season.
"Congrats to Luke on these very well-deserved honors," said Carleton head coach
Ryan Kershaw. "To be selected as the MIAC Offensive Player of the Year by the MIAC head coaches and to be selected to multiple All-Region teams are notable achievements for Luke following a tremendous junior season. He is the consummate competitor, who has been an integral component to our programs success since the moment he set foot on campus as a first-year."
In addition to being a first-team All-MIAC selection once again, Harris was tabbed for the MIAC's nine-player All-Playoff Team for the second consecutive year. He scored a career-high 33 points with four steals in the semifinals against Gustavus Adolphus.
He played his best against the best. Harris averaged 25.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 3.0 steals in his five games against teams that were regionally-ranked at the end of the season (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Pomona-Pitzer, Bethany Lutheran, and Saint John's).
The Californian totaled 14 games with 20 or more points, including two 30-plus point outputs against regular-season champion Saint John's in addition to his career night in the 2024 playoff semifinals. Harris tied for the most steals in a game by a MIAC player with six against NCAA Tournament qualifier Bethany Lutheran, as well as most single-game assists with nine against regionally-ranked Pomona-Pitzer.
Carleton men's basketball players have collected a total of 31 All-Region awards, including 22 honors since 2006 (see full chart below). This marks the eighth consecutive season that a Carleton men's basketball player was voted to an All-Region team (the Knights did not play in 2020-21 due to the pandemic), and the eighth time that a Knight collected recognition from both the NABC and D3hoops.com.
