BUCHAREST, Romania – The Romanian Basketball Federation has named Carleton College head coach Ryan Kershaw as an assistant for the senior national team staff.

Kershaw will serve as an assistant coach for current Chicago Bulls assistant coach, and former Carleton men's basketball student-athlete Jonah Herscu, who was named as the Romanian team head coach earlier this month.

"I'm ecstatic for the opportunity to serve as an assistant coach and to work with a former player and dear friend as part of the Romanian National Team coaching staff," Kershaw said. "Jonah is one of my closest friends, and I am grateful to the Romanian Basketball Federation for this opportunity. Due to his connection to Romania, this means a great deal to Jonah and his family, and I look forward to supporting him, the players, staff, and federation in the best possible way. "

Herscu, whose father was born in Bucharest, has 17 seasons of experience in American professional basketball, accumulated in the NBA, NBA G League, and WNBA. He has served as an assistant coach for the Chicago Sky, Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, and Portland Trailblazers. During the 2025-26 season, Herscu served as the head coach for the Rip City Remix, the NBA G-League affiliate of the Portland Trailblazers, where he led the team to its first post-season appearance in franchise history.

Team Romania is set to compete in the FIBA EuroBasket 2029 pre-qualifiers in late August. FIBA EuroBasket, organized by FIBA Europe, stands as the premier official international basketball competition for men's national teams across Europe. The tournament holds a rich history as one of the world's most competitive international basketball showcases outside of the Olympics and the FIBA World Cup. The championship features 24 national teams competing across multi-host group stages and a single-elimination knockout phase. Held every four years, EuroBasket serves as both a stage for top European talent—frequently highlighting NBA and EuroLeague stars—and a high-stakes arena for continental basketball supremacy.

After a week-long minicamp in Bucharest, the team will travel to Copenhagen to face the Denmark National Team on Aug. 27. The team will then return to its home country to face Bulgaria in Tulcea on Aug. 30. Each game will be available to stream online through FIBA's Official Video Hub.
