NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Carleton College distance runners
Jeremy Fong '23 (Niiza-Shi, Japan/Christian Academy in Japan) and
Clara Mayfield '23 (Manhattan, Kan./Manhattan) were both selected to the Academic All-America® Division III Track & Field/Cross Country team for 2022-23 in voting by the College Sports Communicators (CSC, formerly the College Sports Information Directors of America [CoSIDA]).
The Academic All-America program recognizes excellence in both the classroom and competition. At total of 50 men and 54 women were selected to the first, second and third Academic All-America squads. Fong and Mayfield were both third-team picks. Carleton is the only school from the MIAC and 1 of only 16 NCAA Division III schools to have Academic All-Americans for both men's and women's track & field/cross country in 2022-23.
Carleton student-athletes have now earned the Academic All-America Award a total of 35 times overall, including 10 first-team selections, 18 second-team picks, and 7 third-teamers (see full list of Carleton honorees below.) The track & field/cross country programs have accounted for 15 of those 15 Academic All-America honors. Fong's award is the eighth earned by the Carleton men's program while Mayfield took home the seventh honor for the women's program.
Mayfield graduated in June after majoring in biology. She wrapped up her time racing for the Knights with nine All-America awards to her résumé, tied for the third-highest total for a Carleton woman. She was the first Carleton woman to earn All-America recognition three times in cross country, including a third-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Championships in helping Carleton to a fourth-place showing, its best-ever result at nationals. Mayfield added a third-place finish in the mile run at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships and both a third-place result in the 10K and fourth-place finish in the 5K at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Only four Carleton women earned All-America status in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field during the same academic year. Mayfield joined Anna Prineas as the only individuals to accomplish that feat twice. Mayfield collected 18 All-Region honors during her career and accumulated 15 All-MIAC awards, including six conference individual titles. She anchored Carleton squads that won the MIAC Cross Country Championships in 2019 and 2022.
Fong majored in sociology/anthropology with minors in cross-cultural studies and European studies. He collected All-MIAC recognition six times and earned multiple Academic All-MIAC awards. A member of the 2019 MIAC Champion cross country team, Fong received all-conference honorable mention in the 800-meter run and 4x400 relay at the 2021 MIAC Outdoor Championships. He secured All-MIAC status by virtue of his third-place result in the 1000-meter run at the 2023 conference indoor meet and added his final All-MIAC Honorable Mention as Carleton finished fourth in the 4x400-meter relay at the same meet.
The MIAC saw four other student-athletes honored as well, as Gustavus senior Birgen Nelson and Saint Benedict junior Fiona Smith were both first-team Academic All-America honorees on the women's side, while Saint John's juniors Carter Grove and Lloyd Young were both third-team honorees on the men's side.
Additionally,
Matt Wilkinson '22—a two-time Academic All-American and eight-time All-American, including national titles in both the 3000-meter steeplechase and 5000-meter run at the 2021 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships—was a first-team selection this year while racing for the University of Minnesota (D-I).
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by their sports information director.
