Knights lose pair of one-run games at Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS – The Carleton College softball team dropped a pair of one-run games at Augsburg University on Sunday, falling 1-0 and 6-5.

Game 1 Recap
Augsburg 1, Carleton 0
Bryanna Schaffer (So./San Diego, Calif./Mar Vista) toed the rubber for the Knights and turned in her best outing of the season. She went the distance and allowed only five hits but was saddled with the hard-luck loss after surrendering an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Knights (11-15, 2-8 MIAC) had opportunities to get on the scoreboard, but they left nine runners on base, including six in scoring position. Olivia O'Connor twirled a four-hit shutout for the Auggies (19-11, 5-7 MIAC) with nine strikeouts.

Schaffer had two hits of Carleton's four hits in the game, including a triple in the top of the seventh.

Game 2 Recap
Augsburg 6, Carleton 5
The Knights trailed 5-2 before pushing across three runs in the fourth inning. The game remained knotted until Augsburg got a key two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.

Brynn Hostettler was "effectively wild" in earning the win for Augsburg. In addition to issuing eight walks, she had four wild pitches but limited the Knights to only three hits in the contest.

Carleton relief pitcher Faith Hanshaw (Sr./The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands Christian Academy) turned in a quality effort but took the loss after giving up one run over her 4.0 innings on the rubber.

Offensively, Adriana Wiggins (Fy./Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) contributed a RBI single in the top of the third inning, and Helen Moses (Jr./Denver, Colo./Denver East) smacked a two-run, game-tying double in the fourth inning. Grace Colburn (Fy./Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge) had the other hit for Carleton.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton hosts cross-town rival St. Olaf College for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader on Monday, April 24.
