MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – The No. 21-ranked Carleton College women's golf team moved into 10th place after the second day of play at the Golfweek D-III Fall Invitational.
"The team played another solid round in cool, windy conductions," said Carleton head coach
Sloan Wallgren. "I'm very proud of the way our team handled the conditions."
Carleton posted a team score of 311 on Monday and now owns a 36-hole total of 620, one shot behind No. 22 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and two back of Grinnell College for eighth place. The Knights are only 11 shots out of third place. As a team, the Knights have accumulated 108 pars, second most in the field.
No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer continues to lead the 24-team field—which includes 18 nationally-ranked squads—and will carry a 22-shot lead over No. 7 Carnegie Mellon University into Tuesday's final round.
Carter Sichol continues to lead the way for Carleton. The sophomore is alone in third place out of 120 golfers with a 36-hole total of 146 (71-75, +2). Her second round included two birdies as she played the final 12 holes at even par. Sichol enters the final round three shots behind Katelyn Vo of Pomona-Pitzer for the top spot on the individual leaderboard.
Mindy Zhai carded a 75 (+3) in the second round and climbed 20 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 31st place at 154 (79-75).
Natalie Tatar's round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 No. 5 as she holed out from 40 yards. She posted a score of 79 on Monday and is tied for 91st overall (84-79=163).
Cynthia Lu and
Sarah Zheng both posted scores of 82 during the second round. They are now tied for 79th (79-82=161) and 88th (80-82=162), respectively.
"Tuesday is a big day; we are going to leave it all out there on the course," Wallgren said.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will once again be in the first groups to tee off on Tuesday. The Knights will play alongside Grinnell, Mary Hardin-Baylor, and No. 8 St. Catherine University, which slipped to 12th in the standings.
