Knights drop tight battle with Carthage, 5-4

Box Score ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Carleton College men's tennis team absorbed its first setback of the season, coming up just short in a tight 5-4 battle with Carthage College. The match was knotted 4-4 with the last singles match decided via a super tiebreaker.

"It was exciting to play another top caliber team," said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. "The match was as tight as my shirt after an all you can eat seafood buffet."

Carthage improved to 8-0 on the season and took advantage of wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to grab the early lead, the later of those matches decided by another tiebreaker. Aswath Viswanathan (Jr./Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and Tate Fuller (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) got a point back for the Knights (4-1 overall) with their 8-6 triumph at No. 3 doubles.

Even though Tarm Rojanasoonthon (Fy./Bangkok, Thailand/Chulalongkorn) notched a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, the Knights still faced a 4-2 deficit in the team competition but fought to the conclusion.

Xander Roti (Sr./Locust Valley, N.Y./Friends Academy) rallied from a set down to claim the No. 3 singles match by a 2-6, 6-3, 10-2 tally, and Noah Mueller (Jr./Dubai, UAE/German International School Dubai) tied the match up with his 6-3, 6-4 result at the sixth slot.

That left the match to be determined by the outcome of the No. 5 singles match.

Ultimately, Cooper Ferruzzi prevailed 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 10-8 to give the undefeated Firebirds their sixth victory of the month and eighth of the campaign.
