GRINNELL, Iowa – The Carleton College women's swimming & diving team took second place out of nine programs at the Pioneer Invite. The Knights combined on 29 top-10 finishes in the individual events and top-4 results in all three relays on Saturday.
Elizabeth Chatard turned in the top performances for Carleton, winning both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events.
The final day of racing began with the 200-yard medley relay where
Maddie Damberg-Ott, Chatard,
Sophie Baggett, and
Zoe Morton finished second with a time of 1:53.20.
Carleton had three top-10 swims in each of the first four individual events of the day.
The 400-yard IM saw
Stephanie Baranov and
Ashley Rosenberg finish third and fourth, respectively, with times of 4:58.05 and 5:02.67.
Aviva Sachs placed 10th at 5:10.90.
Caroline Cramption,
Isabelle Riley, and Baggett were seventh, ninth, and 10
th, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly. They turned in times of 1:03.89, 1:04.47, and 1:04.66.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Morton led the way, slicing more than 7.5 seconds off her seed time to finish at 2:04.27 and earn sixth place.
Julia Luljak followed with one of her five top-10 performances; this one was a seventh-place result at 2:04.79. Damberg-Ott took 10th at 2:06.51
Chatard won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.68, Luljak finished fifth at 1:11.57, and Rosenberg captured 10th by touching the wall at 1:13.32.
Damberg-Ott and Baranov paced the Carleton entries in the 100-yard backstroke, covering the distance at 1:01.69 and 1:03.21, respectively, to finish fourth and ninth.
The morning session wrapped up with the 800-yard freestyle relay where the Knights' entry took second place. Crampton, Baggett, Baranov, and
Raine Bernhard combined on a time of 8:28.27.
Between the morning and evening sessions, the 1,650-yard freestyle was contested. Luljak continued her weekend of strong swims with a second-place result, taking second after covering the distance in 19:18.95. Crampton took 8th in the same event with her time of 20:03.01.
The evening session began with the 100-yard IM, and Carleton put four swimmers inside the top-10. Morton was third out of 64 racers with a time of 1:03.42, while Baranov, Luljak, and Damberg-Ott finished sixth, eighth, and ninth, respectively, with times of 1:05.65, 1:05.92, and 1:06.18.
Damberg-Ott and Baranov were right back in the water for the next event, the 200-yard backstroke where they posted times of 2:13.15 and 2:18.83 to finish in fourth and eighth places, respectively.
Morton and Bernard were sixth and 10
th out of 63 finishers in the 100-yard freestyle. The former took sixth at 56.79, while the latter claimed 10
th at 57.04.
Carleton added a 1-2-4 finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. Chatard won her second event of the day with a time of 2:29.71. Luljak earned second place with a swim of 2:32.20, while Rosenberg took fourth after reaching the wall at 2:35.44.
The 200-yard butterfly saw Crampton place fourth at 2:22.08, while Riley was seventh at 2:30.26.
The busy day of racing concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Eleanor Hebard, Bernhard, Bagget, and Morton earned fourth place with a combined time of 3:49.50.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will head out on its annual Winter Break Training Trip from Dec. 6-14. The team will once again visit Islamorada in the Florida Keys.
