ST. PAUL, Minn. –
Jasmine Choi (So./Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) matched a career-high with 19 points and
Bailey Harmon (Jr./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) set a career-high of her own as the Carleton College women's basketball team rode a balanced scoring effort to a 71-64 win at Macalester College.
Choi and Harmon (10 points) both reached the double-digit mark for Carleton (4-6, 3-4 MIAC), while twin guards
Emma Henry (So./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) and
Isabelle Henry (So./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) followed close behind, scoring nine points apiece.
Macalester (5-5, 3-4 MIAC) took its largest lead of the game, at 9-0, less than three minutes into the contest, but the Knights fought back after their slow start. An extended, 14-6 Carleton run spanning the last seven minutes of the first period—capped by Harmon's triple—shrunk the home team's lead to a single point, 15-14, by the first intermission.
An
Isabelle Henry three-pointer at the six-minute mark of the second quarter tied the game at 19-19. One possession later, another triple from Harmon gave the Knights a three-point advantage, their first lead of the game. While the teams were able to match each other, basket for basket, over the last five minutes of the half, Carleton never relinquished its lead, and entered the half up, 32-28.
The Knights were able to extend their lead to as many as seven during the third quarter, but a four-minute, 9-2 run by Macalester evened the game at 39 midway through the period. The teams battled back and forth before entering the final stanza deadlocked at 48-48.
Carleton scored 8 of the quarter's first 12 points to push their lead to four with 7:12 remaining in the game. Macalester once again responded, as a 10-2 run gave the home team a 62-58 advantage at the 4:41 mark, a surge that included the Scots' first lead of the second half.
The Knights were able to close out the game with the balanced scoring effort they had leaned on all night. Led by
Margie Clauss's (So./Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) five points during the stretch, four of Carleton's five starters scored during an 11-0 run that put the Knights up for good, 69-62, with less than a minute remaining.
The Knights shot 42 percent from the field, while holding the Scots to a 39 percent performance. Carleton won the battle from the charity stripe – making 18 of their 24 free throws, compared to Macalester's 8-for-15 effort – and in the turnover column, giving up 12 compared to Macalester's 17.
Carleton converted their takeaways into 15 points, besting the Scots' nine points off turnovers. Three Knights recorded multiple steals, as
Isabelle Henry's three led all players, with Choi and Clauss tying for second with two each.
Five players finished in double figures for Macalester—including a 16-point effort for Katherine Norquist, but the rest of the Scots roster accounted for only two points.
"We battled for a good road win tonight; everyone played and everyone contributed," said Carleton head coach
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "Back to work tomorrow in preparation for a another challenging MIAC road game."
Up Next for the Knights
